Meg's PhD research involves the social-visual analysis of Kawaii fashion
subcultures in Harajuku, Shinjuku and Shibuya in Tokyo, specifically
Gothic Lolita, Gyaru, Decora, Fairy Kei and Shironuri styles. She
uses semiotics, public event description, and interviews with models
and designers in the field to decode the
visual stories of these subcultures and how they negotiate gender and
power. Meg’s research aims to refine the Birmingham School’s visual approach to subcultural studies & so address the gap in the
literature regarding feminine subcultures.

Hello! I’m Meg. I’m the researcher behind the Harajuku Dollhouse
project. While completing a Sociology PhD I’m researching kawaii fashion
subcultures. Specifically, I specialise in the socio-visual analysis of Gothic
Lolita, Gyaru, Shironuri, Fairy Kei
and Decora styles. My background is in Fine Arts, Sociology and
English Literature and I’m also the director of Electric Alice. Nice to meet
